Anyone with access to the Internet may connect to the BTS web server. To access a specific data set, go to the web address listed above in the Network Resource Name. The BTS server allows visitors to create an archive package for download in one of three common formats: .zip - an MS-DOS zip archive; .tgz - a gzip-ed unix tar archive; and .tar - a unix tar archive. This archived package is stored in a temporary file which can then be copied to the visitor's home directory.

The subject file represents the Arkansas portion of the Amtrak Stations database, a geographic data set containing Amtrak intercity railroad passenger terminals in the United States and Canada. Attribute data include services and passenger amenities provided at the station.
The database provides locational and attribute information for use in national and regional cartographic and spatial analysis applications. It is the intention of the Arkansas Geographic Information Systems Board to facilitate dissemination of public data.

All point records are represented by a single coordinate pair and a unique feature identifier; the Amtrak Station Code stored in the FEATURID field). Attribute data can be matched to specific point records using this identifier.
The database includes all Amtrak railroad and thruway bus stations listed in the 1998 Fall/Winter Amtrak Timetables. Also included are Amtrak railroad stations listed in earlier releases of this database that are now closed. Regional commuter railroad stations that are not also served by Amtrak are not included in this version; those stations are currently included in the Fixed-Guideway Transit Network database. The database does not include information on passenger boarding's; those data are considered to be proprietary by Amtrak.
Attribute data were extracted from the station listings in the Fall/Winter 1998 Amtrak National and Northeast Timetables, and reflect station characteristics as of October 25, 1998.
Stations having valid street addresses were geocoded to 1995 TIGER/Line(TM) street and railroad centerline files. Positional accuracy for those points is consistent with the accuracy of 1995 TIGER/Line(TM) files, or within about 50 meters of their true position. Stations with ambiguous or incomplete street addresses (and stations located in Canada) were positioned using a combination of street name, nearest railroad centerline, and place name. Positional accuracy for these points may vary from 100 to 1000 meters of their true location.
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics files were downloaded from the National Transportation Atlas Databases 1999 disk. These files were converted to Arcview shapefiles using the ntadconv.avx extension that is contained on the disk. The additional attribute tables that were included on the disk were joined to the tables of the original shapefiles. These joins were characterized by both 1:1 and 1:many relationships.
